Food and beverage products are recalled due to reasons ranging from contamination to labeling errors, and here is New Food’s roundup of the most recent cases.
Benyfit Natural Pet Food Ltd has taken the precautionary step of recalling several types of frozen raw dog food products containing beef because the products might contain Salmonella. These products have been sold by various independent pet food stores and online.
Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause illness in humans and animals. The products could, therefore, carry a potential risk because of the presence of Salmonella, either through direct handling of the pet food or indirectly, for example from pet feeding bowls, utensils, or contact with the feces of animals.
In humans, symptoms caused by salmonella usually include fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. Infected animals may not necessarily display signs of illness, but symptoms can include diarrhea.
Customers who bought the affected products online have been contacted. Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling these products.
Pet owners who have bought any of the products have been advised not to use them and return them to the store from where they were purchased for a full refund. When handling and serving raw pet food, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has noted that it is always advised to clean utensils and feeding bowls thoroughly after use. Consumers should wash hands thoroughly after handling raw pet food, bowls, utensils, or after contact with the feces of animals, and raw pet food should be stored separately from any food (especially ready to eat foods).
Cliftons Farm is recalling raw milk and raw cream because Campylobacter has been found in the products.
The usual symptoms caused by Campylobacter are fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps.
Point of sale notices is displayed in their shop, on their website and Facebook page. These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.
Waitrose & Partners are recalling Waitrose & Partners Slow Cooked Beef and Ale Pie because it contains hazelnuts and milk which are not mentioned on the label. This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to nuts (hazelnuts) and/or an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents.
Waitrose has been advised to contact the relevant allergy support organizations, which will tell their members about the recall. The company has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers. These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.
JFC (UK) Ltd has also announced a product recall due to undeclared allergens. The company is recalling S&B Golden Curry Medium Hot Sauce Mix because it contains celery and mustard which are not mentioned on the label. This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to celery and/or mustard.
JFC(UK) Ltd has been advised to contact the relevant allergy support organizations, which will tell their members about the recall. The company has issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers.
Customers who bought the above products and have an allergy to the undeclared ingredients have been advised to return them to the store for a refund.
